Chapter 15 Bubble, pg. 384

IMG_3686I personally do not believe I would be willing to speak out and criticize my government if I knew I were going to risk imprisonment or torture. I am too scared to do anything like that. It would depend on how strongly I felt about the matter. I applaud people who can stand up for what they believe is right.

Chapter 14 Bubble, pg. 365

IMG_3685A media outlet should always apologize to the public when it makes a mistake. If they don’t, their reputation could go very bad. People will start assuming things about the media outlet and make up their own stories. Even though I believe apologies are necessary, they can make things worse if they are not worded correctly. An example of this is when Dove released advertisements of a black woman turning into a white woman after using its soap. When they released an apology, it seemed as though they were only sorry it offended people and that they didn’t regret actually posting it.

IMG_3688In my opinion, there are different levels of annoyance when it comes to programs featuring sponsored products in the show. Most of the time, it does not really bother me unless they make it too obvious. I do not find product placement to be more annoying in scripted shows than in reality shows because I feel as though product placement seems more natural in scripted shows. Whether or not the show is scripted or reality doesn’t matter; it is the way it is executed.

MJiii: Life Without Media

Josh Pruett

We are so consumed by media that we don’t even realize how much it owns us. Seriously, think about it. How much time have you gone without media? Don’t count sleeping.

I spent 24 hours without media this past weekend, and it was awful. Not only does my introverted personality revolve around sticking my head in my phone or computer at all points of the day, but media is also my job. I’m a media major, I work behind the scenes on a TV show, I follow daily social media influencers, and to top it off I have Snapchat streaks I need to keep up with.

I started on Saturday, November 10th. I went home for the weekend and watched TV all Friday night and Saturday morning. Around 7pm Saturday night I started on my 24 hour journey.

That night I talked to my mom and dad for around 3…

MJiii: Life Without Media

Media is a big part of today’s world, and it can be hard to get away from. I don’t think some people realize how much of an impact it has on their daily lives. A 24-hour break from media can teach you a lot about yourself.

My day without media started on November 10, 2018, when I went to sleep that night at eleven o’clock. I woke up naturally without an alarm set on my phone unlike usual. I borrowed my mom’s wristwatch to keep the time. After I ate breakfast and did a little bit of cleaning at my house, I got in my car and drove to Jonesboro. I live an hour away, so it was difficult not listening to any music. I’m a very absent-minded driver, so not looking at billboards was not an issue for me.

I got back to my dorm and took a quick shower. I grabbed a couple of board games and headed over to the library. The day before I went media free, I had messaged a couple of my friends who were also doing the project and asked if they wanted to do it together. It was hard not being able to message them all the day of and just assume they would all make it on time. Alex Galbraith, Will Burrow, Josh Pruett, and Kylie Adams all met me at the library around three o’clock. We went down to the bottom floor of the library because nobody usually goes there. Then the games began.

First, we played Monopoly. I was the banker, and I didn’t actually play because that game makes me really mad. I am a sore loser sometimes. The game went on for a long time, and Alex ended up being the winner. After that, we decided to play Clue. I actually did play in this one. Kylie won one round of the game, and I won the other. Lastly, we played Cards Against Humanity. It was a good thing that we were on the bottom floor because we laughed a lot. Josh was the triumphant winner, leaving poor Will with no wins by the end of the night.

We all headed back to our dorms around half past six, and I got ready for my chapter meeting for my sorority. They use a slideshow to present information to us during the meeting. Thankfully, I had to sit on the floor behind a bunch of chairs, so I stayed media free!

After the meeting, I went back to my dorm, ate some food, and talked to my roommate before falling asleep. I actually ended up not setting an alarm for the next day, so my roommate was late for class because I usually wake her up.

It was very difficult for me to go without media. I would go to grab my phone various times without even thinking about it, but I didn’t have it on me. It was weird realizing how much I use my phone without thinking about it.

The thing I missed the most was my phone and the feeling of connection. I get all of my schedule updates on my phone, and I use my phone to talk to friends and family. I felt very behind. I didn’t really miss my television or laptop because anything that I can do with those, I usually do on my phone. I didn’t miss the fact that I didn’t have to respond to a message every two minutes.

Though this assignment wasn’t exactly easy for me to do, I think it is a good feeling to be able to get away from it all for a while. I doubt I will ever do it again, but it is worth at least doing once. I wasn’t really surprised by my struggle; I was mainly just annoyed with myself. I’m sure I could get used to using media less, but I don’t really want to.

The main thing I learned about my consumption habits would be that they consume most of my day. I already knew that I used my phone a lot, but I was able to see how much time was actually in a day. Media makes things go by super fast. I could be spending more hours getting things done if I weren’t mindlessly scrolling.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 indicating how much I control my media use and 10 indicating that I’m controlled by the media, I would rate myself a 6. I rate myself this way because even though I do depend on media for a lot, I am consciously using it. I could go without it if I wanted to, but I willingly choose to let the media play a big part in my life. It is something that I try to use to my advantage. I’ll continue to approach media the same way, but I would recommend others to complete a journal. It can show you if you need to make a change in the way you use media.

IMG_3407I have 7 different social media accounts. The accounts I have are with Instagram, Snapchat, WordPress, Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, and YouTube. I do not believe I share too much on social media because I understand the consequences. I only post things that I wouldn’t care if my family saw. I don’t post inappropriate things. I used to share too much when I was younger.

Chapter Bubble 9, pg. 236

IMG_3408I sometimes watch television on Wednesday nights because I like the show Riverdale, and that is when it comes on. Most of the time though, I do not have time to watch it at the time it airs. I go back and watch it on the CW app on my phone later. Any other time I watch television is when other people have it on. I pretty much watch whatever is airing on HGTV if I ever have the TV on myself. I really do not have a set time for watching. I do think it is possible for people to watch too much television because it can be very time consuming and take away from real experiences. It can change the way people view the world in a negative way. I did not watch anything on television last night.

IMG_3404When I listen to audio programs, I generally do not listen to terrestrial radio, satellite radio, or podcasts. The only streaming service I use is Apple Music. I use this source because I can have all my music in one place in one place and can listen offline. I get to choose what I listen to and it is cheap because you get a discount as a college student.

MJii: My Media Use

Media of all sorts definitely plays a huge roll in today’s society. My media usage is no exception to that. My phone is something I am very dependent on. It is what wakes me up in the mornings. I start my day by checking all of my notifications. This includes text messages, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook. Anytime I have a break during the day, I am more than likely on my phone. I check it subconsciously. Most of the other mediums I used were not as consistent as my phone usage. My laptop is a big contributor to my media behavior because it is where I do almost all of my homework.

I would say that my media consumption was pretty even each day. Sometimes I would use media for very long periods of time, so it seemed as though my consumption amount was shorter even when it wasn’t. My peak days would probably be the days when there was an exciting event going on like Cream of the Crop (Day 4) or Big Little Reveal (Day 5). On Saturdays, I usually watch movies all day with my mom, so those would also be considered peak days.

The days I most seldom used media would be Sundays. Sundays were the only days I was working during the past couple weeks, and the employees cannot be on their phones where I am employed. I work at Larry’s Pizza in Paragould. The only media that is there are televisions for the customers and phones for ordering. I barely use media when I am there. There is hardly any media engagement when I am at my job. There were not many other days that media was seldom used for me.

The main causes of the differences in my patterns of media use would be naps and sorority events. Though media is a big part of my life, there really was no set pattern to when I used it. This is due to the fact that none of my days look the same. There is always something different going on. I do always try to make room for a nap, the difference is just how long they are.

I believe my media choices say a lot about me. Most of my interactions with people are done through media. I believe that this shows some of my introverted qualities. I also have a hard time staying focused, and I use my phone as a distraction. My family lives an hour from Jonesboro, so I use it to stay connected with them. My peers are often using media as well, and I believe it helps us stay in touch. My friends and I hang out in person all of the time, but our phones are how we know where we all are and when we are available. I personally think that my media usage has nothing to do with my residence other than most of the things I enjoy doing in town aren’t free, so I play on my phone instead.  Some of my hobbies involve my phone, so it would be hard to go without it.

In conclusion, I think media is a great thing. My journal opened my eyes to just how important media is to me. It can be very time consuming and seen as unhealthy, but I can’t imagine a world without it. People sometimes take advantage of it, but humans are more advanced because of it.
